“Democracy is never won but always remains to be won”.

Across the world, democracy is in decline in different forms and speeds: from the blatant crackdowns on freedoms in Venezuela, Myanmar, Belarus, to the more subtle democratic backsliding in the democratic countries. The deterioration of democracy can be really faster than you imagine - just look at the case in Hong Kong. 

At the same time, great progress is being made in innovating democracy, in making it more accountable, and closer to citizens. New technologies have brought a wealth of innovation that is just waiting to be seized by us all across the world. 

For democracy to be won, we must unite across borders. That is why we are working for the creation of a citizens-led supranational power, the Union for Democracy. We need this union to coordinate responses and implement measures - such as economic sanctions - to support freedom fighters, and ultimately safeguard freedoms and innovate democracy.
